Church of Saint John the Baptist

The silver dome sets apart this small but impressive Greek church dedicated to Saint John the Baptist.Located in the Christian Quarter of the Old city and built on Byzantine remains of an earlier church, this beautifully decorated site is not regularly open to visitors but worth arranging a visit. As the oldest church in Jerusalem, dating back to the 5th century, the church served as the Knights Hospitalier in the crusader period, helping to heal crusading knights wounded en route to Jerusalem. Among the ruins excavated at the site are ancient and Byzantine objects, including some with ancientGreek writing.
