Bar Mitzvah in Jerusalem

  • The big day has finally arrived. The big 1-3. The family crowds into minibuses that were rented specially for the occasion and heads off to the Western Wall with anticipation and excitement in the air. Then, before you have a chance to return your white satin kippah, it’s over. In the blink of an eye, children have turned into adults, and families turn to head back.

    בר מצווה בכותל

But before your family’s celebrations become 'just another’ memory of 'just another’ trip to Israel, let our Old City Bar Mitzvah Tour and Celebration expand and enhance your family’s experience of this momentous rite of passage.

Located next to the expansive plaza of the Western Wall is the Western Wall Heritage Foundation. More than a boring history lesson, this experiential historical center brings to life the ancient footsteps of the Jewish people. Their range of touring options - from the interactive exhibitions of its Generations Center to the the underground tunnels beneath the Wall - offer new insights into the history of the people and places of the Old City and Jerusalem, from Abraham to the 1967 reunification of Jerusalem following the Six Day War.

The 'Hall of Light' is a unique sound and light display that recounts the story of Rabbi Yisrael HaLevi who yearned to reach Jerusalem all his life but perished in the Holocaust. According to folktales, paratroopers fighting to recapture Jerusalem in 1967 were inspired by Rabbi HaLevi's words and cited them as a driving force in their efforts.

These and other supplemental experiences are designed to enhance your family's Bar Mitzvah visit to the Western Wall. A tunnel tour, in the ancient bedrock unearthed beneath the plaza, reveals archeological explorations about how ancient Jews lived in the Old City. A small prayer room exposed during the excavations is believed to be the closest place to the Holy of Holies from the ancient Temple. The tunnel tour begins next to the Wall plaza and ends in the Muslim Quarter near the Via Dolorosa. It is an hour and a half of exciting revelations and findings, one that your family will never forget.

And if you're looking for a more adventurous experience, take a ride on Jerusalem's Time Elevator, located in the nearby city center and adjacent to the lively shopping and restaurants of the Ben Yehuda pedestrian mall. Travel back in time 3,000 years as actor Haim Topol leads you through the winding streets of Jerusalem past and present. On the way you'll meet Biblical figures like King Solomon, who built the First Temple, Zedekiah, the last king of Judah before the Babylonian Exile, Jeremiah the Prophet, and King Herod the Great; and Jerusalem characters who impacted the city over the years. Bar Mitzvah celebrants will receive a "Time Travelers" certificate signed by Gemaryahu Ben Shafan from the book of Jeremiah, who was a royal scribe, and by Ezekial Ibn Negev.

A world of meaningful and unique opportunities await you and your family in Jerusalem. And as you set out to plan your celebration, we are here to help you every step of the way. From preparation to production, we never lose sight of the significance and joy that shines over and through momentous rite of passage. It's the stuff that memories are made of.
