Via Dolorosa

For the faithful pilgrims who traverse the streets of the Via Doloroa, along the same path that Jesus carried the cross on his back on his way to his crucifixion thousands of years ago, it is the spiritual as much as physical journey that continues to impact so many, even today. The winding route from the Fortress of Antonia to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre is comprised of fourteen stations - nine on the Via Dolorosa and five in the Church.

The stations include:

- Trial by Pontius Pilate, stations one and two
- The Three Falls, stations three, seven and nine
- The Encounters, among them with Jesus’ mother Mary at station four

Each Friday a Roman Catholic procession, organized by Franciscans from a monastery at the eight station, follows the traditional route. Other, more dramatic, re-enactments often take place with theatrically staged and dressed actors playing key parts from this pivotal period in history.
