Dome of the Rock

Not to be confused with the Al Aqsa Mosque, the Dome of the Rock is a sacred Muslim shrine that dates back to the Umayyad dynasty of the 7th century. Built atop the Foundation Stone where Muslims believe Muhammad ascended to heaven, the Dome of the Rock was built atop the Second Temple on the Temple Mount. According to Jewish tradition, that same stone was the sight of the Biblical Sacrifice of Isaac by Abraham.

Historians believe that the Dome of the Rock was built in response to the construction of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, and it remains the oldest Muslim structure untouched or unchanged from its original building. A visit to the site weaves a fascinating tale of history and religion across the Temple Mount and the Old City below. The beautiful artwork adorning the exterior and interior of the compound include mosaic, faience and marble work representing Byzantine and Islamic art and architecture.
