Church of St. Anna

Christian lore tells of Jesus miraculously healing a man who had been sick for 38 years at the Pool of Bethesda. This site is now located inside the courtyard of the Church of St. Anna, near Lions Gate. The church was built by the Crusaders in honor of Virgin Mary, mother of Jesus, who is believed to have been born in Jerusalem. The Crusaders also built a small chapel at the source of the healing water that pilgrims often sought out to take a sip and cure their ailments.
After being conquered by Muslim ruler Saladin, the building was converted into a school. Several centuries later, the church was rebuilt by Napoleon III and was given to the French missionaries who worked in Africa. The excellent acoustics and the rich history of the church make it a very special place to visit.
