Al Aqsa Mosque

As many will tell you, one prayer at the Al Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem is worth 500 prayers in mosques elsewhere in the world. This is one of the holiest places in Islam - and an integral part of the Temple Mount complex which, together with the Dome of the Rock, is called the “Noble Sanctuary” or Al Haram Ash-Sharif. Today the Mosque can hold up to 5,000 individuals for prayer services.

Dating back to the Umayyad dynasty in 700 CE, the Mosque has suffered destruction and reconstruction over the centuries, owing to everything from natural earthquakes and erosion to man-made wars. The Mosque is an amazing example of early Islamic architecture and a real testament to the complex layers of political, social and religious histories that the Old City, Jerusalem and Israel have experienced for centuries.

Access to the holy site is restricted to specific hours daily.
